Exercise to lose weight at the Wellness Center

Losing weight and staying at an ideal weight is a lifelong battle for most people.

Exercise is still the key to any weight loss program. The Wellness Center, located on the 3rd floor of the Outpatient Services Center at Rockcastle Regional Hospital, offers various ways to exercise. Current classes for February include: body boot camp, karate, kickboxing, spin and Zumba…there is something for all ages and fitness levels!

New additions to the class schedule include yoga which will start February 20 on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:45 to 6:45 p.m. It is a beginner class with focus on strengthening the core and back, as well as improving balance through a flow of Hatha yoga poses. Everyone needs to bring their own mat to class. Instructor Loretta Johnson has been teaching yoga for three years. Yoga classes are $5 each.

Another new addition to the calendar is a women’s self-defense class starting on February 10 and will be a six-week class on Fridays from 5:45-6:45 p.m. Instructor Chris Frith asks that participants pre-register by calling 256-9298. The women’s self-defense class is $30 for all six classes, with discounts available if you bring your own partner.

Your eating habits usually improve right along with increased fitness. One of the most beneficial results is that a person tends to cut out snacks and other “empty” calories that would otherwise be eaten. An ounce of potato chips is the equivalent of walking almost two miles or biking five miles. Exercise can even help suppress hunger pains.

Exercise also promotes a healthier life style. A person may take the stairs rather than the elevator, or walk or bike to the post office rather than take the car. Over time, these small improvements in a person’s physical activity, as well as his eating habits, can make a big difference in his weight and health.
Life style changes are the most effective way to control weight, and regular exercise is the foundation for many of the necessary changes.
