Rockcastle Pediatrics & Adolescents (RockPeds) is the pediatric office of Dr. Callie Shaffer and Dr. Sarah Oliver, and pediatric Nurse Practitioners Courtney Browning and Megan Taylor Pittman, located in the Medical Arts Building at Rockcastle Regional Hospital. Services offered by Rockcastle Pediatrics & Adolescents include newborn care, well-child checks, sports physicals, and management of complex pediatric issues.

Pediatric Cardiology

Kentucky Children’s Hospital pediatric cardiologists travel to Mount Vernon to diagnose and evaluate children’s heart conditions and work with the family to develop the most advanced treatment plan possible. The entire team of cardiac specialists is focused on one goal—healing your child’s heart.

Pediatric Endocrinology

Kentucky Children’s Hospital pediatric endocrinologists evaluate and treat disorders of the endocrine system in children, including growth problems, pubertal development, thyroid disorders, and diabetes. Some of the pediatric endocrine disorders treated are:

Pediatric Nephrology

Kentucky Children’s Hospital pediatric nephrologists provide diagnosis, treatment, and management of childhood renal diseases. These conditions include kidney infections, inherited diseases involving the kidneys, acute and chronic kidney failure, inflammatory diseases, and protein or blood in the urine.

Pediatric Pulmonology

Kentucky Children’s Hospital pulmonologists offer comprehensive diagnosis and treatment for children and adolescents with a range of chronic lung diseases, respiratory disorders, reactive airway diseases, and sleep-related respiratory problems.

Conditions treated include:

• Acute lung injury

• Apnea of infancy

• Asthma

• Bronchiectasis and bronchiolitis

• Dysplasia

• Cystic fibrosis

• Sleep-related respiratory disorders

Pediatric Surgery

The Kentucky Children’s Hospital pediatric surgery team provides diagnostic evaluation and treatment for neonates, infants, children, and adolescents with congenital anomalies and acquired conditions of the head and neck, chest wall and thorax, abdomen, gastro-intestinal tract, genitourinary system, and extremities.

Working with Rockcastle’s primary care team, our experienced team of pediatric surgeons can evaluate potential surgical issues right here in Rockcastle. If surgery is necessary, we will plan and perform the surgery in the Kentucky Children’s Hospital state-of-the-art pediatric surgical facilities. Follow-up care can then also be done back at Rockcastle.

Common general surgical conditions treated include:

• Inguinal, umbilical, and epigastric hernias

• Soft tissue masses

• Gastrointestinal reflux (GERD) not responsive to medical therapy

• Pediatric tumors

• Trauma follow-ups

• Gall bladder disease

• Chronic abdominal pain
